FORT MYERS, FL—October 13, 2009—This week’s pending airdate of the Food Network Challenge series, “Sugar Adventures”, features local award-winning Chocolatier Norman Love as a guest judge. The show is slated to air on the Food Network Channel on Sunday, October 18th, at 8pm EST.
Love is judging another Food Network Challenge series this week (Thursday, October 15) titled “Candy Coasters,” where four competing pastry chefs are building chocolate/candy center pieces inspired by a visit to Hershey Park. Air date is yet to be determined for “Candy Coasters”.
This week’s airing, “Sugar Adventures”, was based on adventure novels. The four contestants were charged with creating a sugar centerpiece artistry sculpture that told an adventure and featured the following novels: Moby Dick; Treasure Island; Journey to the Center of the Earth; and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Love says the contestants were judged on technical merit; technical difficulty; and how true to the theme the competitors were with their overall presentation. Additionally, they were evaluated on how well they worked with their assistants; how well-balanced their creation was in color and appearance; and how well they told the whole adventure story, versus just a chapter.
Love says it was an extremely difficult undertaking for the contestants. “On top of dealing with the reputation of being on a top-rated national television program, an audience, lights, microphones and other competition elements, the competitors only had about three to four weeks in advance to prepare, which is a relatively short time to prepare for a competition,” Love adds. “This is a lot of pressure for a contestant to achieve excellence in that environment. There is no room for error.”
No stranger to the Food Network, Love has judged many Food Network Challenge competitions and in fact, has been involved since the original pastry competitions he helped create in 1999-2000 that have since evolved into the now Food Network show.
“To be invited back as a judge is an honor and it is such a pleasure to see a brainchild develop into something so successful for the Food Network,” Love says. “Serving as a guest judge is motivating and is a great opportunity to go see talented pastry chefs in action.”
In addition to the Food Network series, Love has made numerous appearances on the Discovery Channel’s “Great Chefs” series, is featured in the PBS series “Baking with Julia”, and his desserts have graced the covers of Art Culinaire, Bakery Magazine and other prominent culinary publications. He is also co-founder of the National Pastry Team Championship.
